Texas: Conservative Student Group Draws Fire for Immigration Game

A conservative student group announced Monday that it will play a “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” game at the University of Texas at Austin, drawing condemnation from Democrats and a threat of expulsion. Members of the Young Conservatives of Texas will wander the campus Wednesday wearing signs that say “illegal immigrant,” and students who capture them and take them to the group’s recruiting table will get $25 gift certificates. The group’s spokesman, Lorenzo Garcia, said the purpose was to spark discussion about illegal immigration. The Texas Democratic Party condemned the game and pointed out that Mr. Garcia recently was a paid staff member with Greg Abbott’s Republican campaign for governor. The campaign’s press secretary, Avdiel Huerta, said it “has no affiliation with this repugnant effort.” Gregory Vincent, the university’s vice president for diversity, said that if the members carried out their plan, they would be “ignoring the honor code and contributing to the degradation of our campus culture.” Students found guilty of violating the honor code could face expulsion.
